Canisus Has Law on Their Side

Date: Oct 20, 2009

For Taylor Law of the Whitby Fury, the path to the next level began at the Governor's Showcase Weekend early on in the 2008-2009 season. Splitting his rookie season in Junior A hockey between the Durham Fury and the Stouffville Spirit as a seventeen year old in 2007-2008, Law bided his time before getting the opportunity to play top line minutes with the Whitby Fury last year. It was at that point that Law began to establish himself as an impact player at the Junior A level and attracted interest from NCAA Division I scouts.

"The college weekend last year (in 2008-2009), I ended up talking to a few schools after the game there and they kind of kept tabs and started watching me a little bit," said Law.

The native of Markham, Ontario went on to put up a solid forty two points in forty two games in his first full season with the Fury but it was not just his offensive ability that drew interest from recruiters but his penchant for success in executing the little things - puck protection, winning one on one battles, reliable defensive play among other things - that can go unnoticed by some but are nevertheless vital to being a quality player at the NCAA Division I level.

"I think the scouts were impressed, they were saying, with my puck possession and what I'm able to do with my vision to find my open teammates and get into good positions where I can make plays, either setting up a goal or scoring," said Law.

Selecting from a group of scholarship offers can be a difficult decision to make but Law explained that he arrived at his decision following a visit to Canisius College prior to the beginning of the Central Canadian Hockey League season.

"I went down on a visit before this season started, an unofficial visit, and I just really liked what they were doing and what I saw," explained Law. "Everyone from the hockey staff to the professors, even talking to some people in admissions, they were all very professional and that's not a knock against any of the other schools, it's just a testament I think to what Canisius is doing with their program."

Law will begin his NCAA Division I career with the Canisius College Griffins in the fall of 2010. In the meantime, realizing that speed is another important factor to success at higher levels, Law is focused on improving his foot speed - already one of his assets at the Junior A level - over the remainder of the season with Whitby.

"I think I'm pretty fast now but obviously the NCAA is a much faster league so if I can get my foot speed up to where I can be one of the faster players in that league, it would be something that Canisius would like to see and would benefit me as a player," he said.

Looking back on his days in minor hockey which led him to the Junior A level, Law - who will study business at Canisius College - not surprisingly, is thrilled to be able to take the next step and continue his hockey career at a higher level but indicated he does not feel he has reached the pinnacle of his advancement through the ranks just yet.

"I'm happy that all my work has paid off; it certainly gives me a sense of accomplishment but obviously it doesn't end there," said Law. "I want to be able to dominate with Canisius and hopefully make another jump after my four years there."
